CAPTURING SPACE

Shape Space + Create Experiences

Gardens aren’t just plants...they’re rooms you shape, spaces you inhabit, and experiences you create. Floors, walls, and ceilings give them form, while height, proportion, and layering give them depth and personality.

But a great garden does more than look good. It supports how you’ll use it: for quiet reflection, lively entertaining, or playful exploration. Every choice...from a hedge to an overhead structure...changes how it feels and functions.

Step in. Walk it, move objects, sketch ideas, experiment boldly. Small shifts can turn a collection of plants into a space that invites presence, coziness, and delight. Whether for yourself or a client, your mission is simple: craft gardens that are not just planted, but truly lived in.

Let's do this!

VIDEO: Capturing Space in Elevation

This month's video shows how I explore capturing space via drawing in elevation...while considering not only the three garden planes, but also height, proportion and layers. Feel free to draw in elevation or perspective this month.

RESOURCES in our DESIGN LIBRARY

Below are some resources to help you with this month's topic. Some are past Garden Design Guides and the last one is our Template Library.

GARDEN ROOMS

Garden rooms are the basic unit of landscape design and an important concept to understand as you make connections between indoor and outdoor spaces.

GARDEN DESIGN GUIDE .001

DESIGNING IN ELEVATION

When you view your design in elevation (as if you’re standing in front of it) it’s easier to understand the space and be able to visualize yourself in it. This is a great tool while you explore options for sculpting your outdoor spaces.

GARDEN DESIGN GUIDE .010

MYSTERY

Mystery encourages the visitor to explore a garden and acts as a transition between garden rooms. I'm including this resource so you can have another video demo of me drawing in elevation.

TEMPLATE LIBRARY

This special bonus is tucked into our membership's main page. It includes templates - for furniture, plants, paving and much more - that you can trace directly or simply use them as inspiration. For this month...look for the people, furniture and planting in ELEVATION drawings.
