Hello Lisa.

I have some news and I want to start with a thank you.

This summer, Paper Garden Workshop received six GardenComm Laurel Awards...including two Gold. And one of the Silver awards went to The Pencil Case. The newsletter you’re reading right now.

That one belongs to you too. Every time you open these emails, ask a question, and share your beautiful ideas, you shape what I write next. So thank you...truly. ♥︎

THE AWARDS

Gold: Garden Graphics Tool Kit (my drawing course)
Gold: Paper Garden Workshop website
Silver: The Pencil Case newsletter
Silver: Paper Garden Workshop blog
Silver: Paper Garden Workshop on Instagram (along with Mandy Orgler)
Silver: Structure + Soul (my talk on spatial design vs. planting design)

IT DIDN’T START OUT THIS WAY

Here’s the part I don’t usually share...and I think it's important.

None of those awards happened overnight. One of the Golds went to Garden Graphics Tool Kit, my eight-week drawing course. It’s the best example I have of how much something can grow after you begin.

When I first offered it in 2021, I’d taught most of those lessons in the classroom for years. But I’d never put them together as an online course. I shared the idea first and then so many of you signed up that I spent that entire first course scrambling, building each lesson the week before it went out.

I didn’t feel ready. I started anyway...and with my husband, Tommy, cheering me through every late night.

That first course was not polished. It was not perfect. It had plenty of wobbly lines of its own. But it was real, and the students showed up anyway. We learned a lot and still had fun. Imperfections and all.

And every year since, I’ve made it better. A little clearer here, a new demo there, almost always because a student asked a question I hadn’t thought of yet. Five years later, it’s still a work in progress...and this summer, it brought home a Gold.

I’ll be honest...I got teary when I heard. I’ve poured so much of myself into this class, and I love it so much. Seeing it recognized warmed my heart in a way I didn’t expect.

AND THAT’S WHERE YOUR DESIGN WORK COMES IN

I think about that first course every time a student tells me she’s waiting until she’s ready. Ready to share her sketch. Ready to take on her first client. Ready to call herself a designer.

You’ve probably heard me say this before...the readiness you’re waiting for is built inside the work, not before it. A mentor had to tell me that too.

Your first plan will have wobbly lines. Your first planting scheme might need moving around. That’s not a sign you don’t belong here...it’s how every designer begins. And over time, those imperfections become something even better. They become your experience, your confidence and your style.

YOUR TURN

So here’s my gentle nudge...start the thing you’ve been waiting to feel ready for, even if it’s just a ten-minute sketch of one flower bed in your garden. Let it be imperfect. Learn, adjust and keep moving forward.

⚘

And if drawing is the thing you’ve been waiting on, Garden Graphics Tool Kit opens again in January. We’ll build your skills one step at a time. Wobbly lines welcome. Take a sneak peek and join the waitlist so you’re the first to know when doors open:

Let’s celebrate our imperfections together. Mine led somewhere I never expected...yours will too.

Happy fall!
