Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week let's dive into the components of a timeless garden wall: fences.

test

COMPONENTS OF A FENCE

Creating an outdoor room is the basic, yet important unit of garden design. Garden rooms are composed of three planes: floors, walls, and ceilings.

⚘

Today, let’s focus on the wall plane and even more specifically: fences. Fences are a simple, yet extraordinarily versatile way to define the wall of your outdoor space, while also adding character. There are three major components to a fence that can be manipulated into many styles, shapes and sizes: posts, rails and pickets.

Posts

The posts are placed in the ground to structurally support your fence. Posts can be finalized with decorative caps to stylize your fence. This can be anything from a dome, a simple flat surface or even an ornamental flourish.

⚘

Rails

Rails, sometimes referred to as stringers or backers, are the horizontal connections between the posts. Depending on your style of fence, there are usually two or three rails that allow for attachment of the pickets.

 ⚘

Pickets

The pickets of a fence are the (typically) vertical components that connect to the rails. Depending on your style of fence, the pickets can vary in height, width and even direction.

FENCE INSPIRATION

There are many different ways to create a fence. By using these three components as a base, the possibilities are endless!
