Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. Since this is World Wildlife Day, let's discuss how to welcome local wildlife into our gardens!

WILDLIFE IN OUR GARDENS.

When designing a garden (at its most basic unit) we are essentially creating an outdoor room where we can eat, play, or relax. We choose materials for the floor, walls and ceiling of this garden room so we can use it for the function intended, while feeling safe and cozy. Essentially, we are creating our own type of leisurely habitat.

As we create this lovely space for ourselves, we can also incorporate habitat for wildlife by including appropriate plants and other elements. Sharing our outdoor space with animals adds a beautiful, dynamic dimension that can't be recreated inside our homes.  

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS.

According to the US Forest Service there are four essential elements needed for survival in a wildlife habitat:

• food
• water
• cover
• space for wildlife to raise their offspring

How could you incorporate these elements into your garden so you are providing the appropriate habitat for your local wildlife? 

There is definitely a lot to consider, so I encourage you to read the articles below to get started, but know this is only the beginning! Check in with your local extension office to see how you can continue learning about this impactful aspect of gardening. Animals in different parts of the world thrive in different ways, so understanding your own region is a great place to start this journey. 

WILDLIFE INSPIRATION.

If you love squirrels chattering, birds singing and butterflies fluttering, then consider what plants would provide the habitat they desire. Landscaping for Wildlife is a lovely article by the US Forest Service that explains how to apply specific wildlife management practices.

The National Wildlife Federation has this wonderful website that encourages gardeners to Plant with a Purpose when considering the needs of wildlife.
