Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics...two areas I'm often asked to clarify. So this week, let's discuss the difference between the terms; landscape design and landscape graphics.

BTW, you might notice that I interchangeably use the terms "garden" and "landscape" when describing design and graphics. I see these as the same, but curious if you define these differently. Hit reply to this email and let me know.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) defines landscape design as "the process used to develop aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor spaces." I'd also like to add that design (in general) is solving a problem.

For example, a client asks for a patio in which they can entertain at least 12 guests as a time. Considering their needs, the site, existing architecture, the budget and a multitude of other considerations, how can you arrange a space that responds to their needs, while still being functional and aesthetically pleasing? You've just solved their problem with a solution!

It's always a fun challenge piecing all these elements together into a cohesive plan.

You can read APLD's more extensive definition here.

LANDSCAPE GRAPHICS

While landscape design is about creating or arranging the outdoor space, landscape graphics is the technique we use to visually communicate our design. In the simplest terms, its how we draw our ideas (whether by hand or digitally).

Landscape graphics allows us to draw our ideas on paper so we can communicate all those beautiful ideas in our head for either our own garden or for a client. Graphics includes drafting elements like paving patterns, plants, furniture, arbors and even drawing scales, text and north arrows.

GRAPHICS + DESIGN INSPIRATION

You may know that I teach an 8-week course every January that focuses on landscape graphics called, GARDEN GRAPHICS TOOL KIT. I love sharing simple techniques that boost your drawing skills (and confidence!), plus we have a ton of fun. Learn more here.

.....

If you're ready to move into design, I'll be opening a new monthly membership late September 2022 (yes, next month!). This beautiful adventure is called THE GARDEN DESIGN COLLECTIVE. I'll be starting with a Founding Member's Group, since the first few months I'll be experimenting with content, teaching methods and format. If you're okay with a little bit of imperfection, jump on my waiting list and I'll let you know when I let this first group in.

This lovely one-point perspective drawing was created by one of my students, Deb Winther, in the membership that follows Garden Graphics Tool Kit.

LET'S DO THIS!

Do you want to refine your drawing skills or learn more about landscape design? Check out my BLOG which has a plethora of resources or hit reply to this email and let me know if you have any questions about my upcoming membership or course. I'd love to hear from you!

.....

If you know someone that needs design inspiration, please feel free to share this newsletter. Anyone can subscribe right here. I also keep a VAULT of past issues in this secret location.

.....

It's been fun visiting with you this week. I look forward to seeing you very soon. ♥︎

All my best,

Lisa
