Welcome back to another edition of my newsletter, lovingly called, THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week let's gather inspiration by visiting other gardens. Yay!

VISITING GARDENS IS SUPER INSPIRING

Have you ever sat in front of a blank piece of paper for hours in hopes that some amazing idea will pop out of your head and transform into the perfect design?

Over the years I've realized if I want good ideas to form I need to get away from my desk and read books, explore botanic gardens, enjoy a friend's outdoor space, visit museums, take long walks, plus visit garden centers and amusement parks (Disney's horticulture displays are awesome). I especially love private garden tours locally and around the country. Nothing beats experiencing a garden space in person.

THINGS TO NOTE WHILE EXPLORING GARDENS

• What makes you feel good in that garden?

• Look at the overall spaces. Are they well-defined with strong bedlines? Do they feel like rooms in themselves? Is the lawn or patio a strong shape?

• What materials are used on the ground plane that you enjoy? Are they unique or perhaps traditional with a fresh twist?

• What materials are used as garden walls? Fences, plants, other creative elements?

• What materials are being used for the ceiling? Is the ceiling covering a special space?

• Think about the color combinations being used in the planting scheme, hardscapes and furniture.

• What plants are being used and what combinations make you go wow? A great way to make fabulous pairings is to visit successful planting designs regionally.
