| MAGICAL MOMENTS
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading Joyful, and one of the joy aesthetics keeps drawing me in: magic. Not the flashy kind, but the quiet, easy-to-miss kind.

This morning, it was snow drifting across our garden, softening every edge. Yesterday, squirrels chased each other along the oak branches, absorbed in their own tiny drama. And more than once this past year, I’ve noticed the gentle sound of our neighbor’s wind chimes, beautifully activated by the air itself.

None of these moments were planned or impressive, yet each one stopped me for a second longer than usual. That pause felt like magic.

In gardens, magical moments often live in the in-between places…a shift in light, a sound on the wind, a turn in a path that reveals something unexpected. They’re rarely headline features, yet they linger in memory.

As designers, it’s easy to focus on getting things “right”, like structure, plants, and colors. But magic doesn’t come from forcing a moment. It comes from creating space for moments to happen and learning to notice them when they do. |
