Hello Lisa.

Happy New Year and welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week, we're focusing on Magical Moments and how slowing down to notice them can be a beautiful source of inspiration. ♥︎

MAGICAL MOMENTS

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading Joyful, and one of the joy aesthetics keeps drawing me in: magic. Not the flashy kind, but the quiet, easy-to-miss kind.

⚘

This morning, it was snow drifting across our garden, softening every edge. Yesterday, squirrels chased each other along the oak branches, absorbed in their own tiny drama. And more than once this past year, I’ve noticed the gentle sound of our neighbor’s wind chimes, beautifully activated by the air itself.

⚘

None of these moments were planned or impressive, yet each one stopped me for a second longer than usual. That pause felt like magic.

⚘

In gardens, magical moments often live in the in-between places…a shift in light, a sound on the wind, a turn in a path that reveals something unexpected. They’re rarely headline features, yet they linger in memory.

⚘

As designers, it’s easy to focus on getting things “right”, like structure, plants, and colors. But magic doesn’t come from forcing a moment. It comes from creating space for moments to happen and learning to notice them when they do.

Some magical moments that stuck with me this year:

  • Evenings when the string lights are on, making the garden feel small, intimate, and just a little theatrical.
  • Seeing a plant bloom for the first time…that quiet, satisfying moment of arrival.
  • Doing yoga in the garden, lying on my back and looking up at the oak canopy, the branches waving gently and powerfully above me.
  • Sitting on the front porch during a rainfall, feeling safe and cozy as the garden glistens around us.
  • Watching a full moon glow through the tree branches.
  • The excitement of spring emergence…noticing what returns and how the garden fills in again for the season.

MAGICAL INSPIRATION

Here are a few ways to bring a little magic into your design world:

Join our free masterclass: 3 Tips for Simple Garden Graphics...starting next week.

LET'S DO THIS!

As we step into a new year, I’m holding onto this idea: What if the goal isn’t to design more, but to notice more? More pauses. More small surprises. More moments that quietly remind us why we love gardens.

.....

If you know someone that needs design inspiration, please feel free to share this newsletter. Anyone can subscribe right here. I also keep a VAULT of past issues in this secret location.

.....

Here’s to noticing the little sparks of magic, wherever you are.

Warmly,

Lisa
