Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! Each issue explores a fresh theme to inspire new ways of thinking about garden design and graphics.

⚘
This week, we’re talking about CONNECTION...those beautiful moments when conversation sparks, ideas flow, and we feel seen and supported. Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen in the most unexpected places…like a winery restroom line. Scroll down to discover what it taught me about connection.

⚘

Before you dive in, did you know The Garden Design Collective is open for fall enrollment? ♥︎ One of the coolest places for meaningful connections.

.....

The photo above is at the APLD Conference in Chicago, Illinois and the zoom image below was this week in the Garden Design Collective.

A LINE, AN OPERA + THE POWER OF CONNECTION

A few weeks ago, we drove up to a winery south of Minneapolis to see an outdoor traveling opera...directed by a dear friend. The performance was amazing, but what I didn’t expect was the conversation that unfolded afterwards while standing in line for the restroom. There I was, chatting with both kids and adults, laughing together, and talking about the opera we had all just seen. It was one of those small, ordinary moments that left me feeling oddly rejuvenated.

⚘

It struck me how easy it was to connect because we had something in common. We’d all listened to the same music, felt the same afternoon air, and been moved by the same performance. That gave us an instant bridge to conversation...and honestly, it warmed my heart.

⚘

The same thing has happened again and again in my design journey. When I taught my very first online drawing class, I wasn’t sure if connection was even possible through a screen. But it happened. We talked, laughed, encouraged one another...and that sense of community only deepened inside my design membership. Even this afternoon, as I finished a monthly live meetup, I felt inspired and grateful for these amazing designers who support each other so generously.

What’s even more beautiful is how these online connections have spilled over into the real world: members meeting for coffee, conversations at events, and friendships forming at conferences and garden tours. That kind of connection fills me with happiness.

⚘

That’s why the Garden Design Collective is so meaningful to me. The community is gracious, inspiring, and full of people who want to learn, grow, and celebrate each other’s successes. For anyone who wants a space to deepen their learning through meaningful connections, this is a place designed for that.

⚘

Just like that line at the winery, it’s not about where we are...it’s about who we’re with and what we hold in common. Sometimes connection begins with something as simple as saying “great job!” and grows into deeper conversations about design style, plant combinations, and paving details.

⚘

How do you make connections...in your design work, your community, or even in the most unexpected places? How do those connections help you grow as a designer?

If you’d like to deepen your connections and build confidence as a landscape designer, join us in THE GARDEN DESIGN COLLECTIVE this fall. Enrollment is open through tomorrow, Friday, September 26.

⚘

Did you catch our FREE MASTERCLASS: STRUCTURE + SOUL? I’ll show you the difference between spatial design and planting design. This class is a great introduction to our design membership too...and the last one takes place later today. ♥︎

⚘

If you know someone that needs a bit of garden inspiration, please feel free to share this newsletter. Anyone can subscribe right here. I also keep a VAULT of past issues in this secret location.

⚘

Keep connecting with the people and ideas that inspire you.
