Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. As we spend more time in our gardens this summer I hope you continue to invite and take notice of the beautiful wildlife that shares your outdoor spaces. How can you start creating a backyard habitat? Let's find out!

BACKYARD HABITAT GUIDE

Earlier this year Monrovia Nursery kindly asked me to create garden plans for their BACKYARD HABITAT GUIDE (heck yes!). Their super-talented crew curated plant lists for three different themes, then I arranged them in a variety of outdoor spaces. These designs show how you can immerse yourself in a beautiful ecosystem of plants and animals within your own backyard.

THREE HABITATS

The BACKYARD HABITAT GUIDE showcases three habitats. Each includes a landscape plan, a plant list, and tips on how to grow a healthy habitat. They include a:

• Hummingbird Garden (Select bright, tubular flowers and attract lots of insects)
• Birding Garden (Include plenty of seeds, fruit, shelter, clean water, plus attract plenty of insects once again)
• Bees + Butterflies Garden (mass pollinator-friendly plants and shoot for bloom spring through fall)

I can't wait to read Benjamin Vogt's new book, PRAIRIE UP, when it's published later this year. Looks like a great source of inspiration for native plant communities that support wildlife with aesthetics in mind.
