Hello Lisa.
Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week, we’re focusing on GRATEFUL CONNECTIONS and how slowing down to notice the people, conversations, and communities around us can be a beautiful source of inspiration in our design work. ♥
⚘
Recently, I had one of those grateful moments while talking with my friend Claire on her Relished Garden podcast. Somewhere in the middle of our conversation I realized I wasn’t just talking about gardens, but soaking in the joy of being in conversation with someone who truly understands this quirky, wonderful world of garden design.
⚘
After we finished recording, I felt this huge wave of gratitude. Not just for the conversation itself, but for the people this work has brought into my life. If you’d like to listen in on that conversation, you can find it here:

| COMMUNITY + CONNECTION
I’ve written before about how important COMMUNITY is for designers and about the power of CONNECTION. This podcast conversation felt like both of those ideas brought to life in real time.
⚘
The longer I do this work, the more I notice a pattern: whenever I feel especially energized or inspired, there’s almost always another designer in the picture. Those little moments of “Oh, you see it too” are what keep me going.
⚘
Lately I’ve been especially grateful for:
- friends like Claire who ask such thoughtful questions
- colleagues in our industry who are generous with their ideas and time (shoutout to Gerry at PlantMaster)
- designers inside Garden Design Collective who constantly cheer each other on with such a positive force
That’s what I mean by “grateful connections.” The work is important, but the people around the work often make it sustainable and joyful. |

| THE GARDEN DESIGN COLLECTIVE
All of this is really at the heart of why I created Garden Design Collective. I wanted a place where garden designers could
- have the kinds of thoughtful, nerdy conversations I had with Claire
- ask questions and share work-in-progress without feeling judged
- find encouragement in the messy middle of projects
I’m so grateful for the community that’s grown there. The way members cheer each other on, offer feedback, and celebrate wins (big and small) is honestly one of my favorite parts of the week.
⚘
If you’ve been craving more connection around your design work, the Collective is open for enrollment right now until March 31. You can learn more and join us here:

| WHO ARE YOUR PEOPLE?
Whether you join us in Garden Design Collective or not, I’d love to leave you with a simple reflection: Who are the people that make your design life richer?
⚘
I’d like to add three important people to my own list: MaryAnn, who keeps me on task at Paper Garden Workshop and graciously lets me talk about garden design incessantly, Mandy, who makes everything beautiful in our newsletters, classes, and more, plus Tommy who is always shifting my perspective so I can see things in new ways.
⚘
Our work really does grow better in good company. |
