Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week, let's explore how YOUR HOUSE can inspire your landscape design. Super cool. ♥︎

A FABULOUS SOURCE OF DESIGN INSPIRATION

Many things can influence our landscape design, but sometimes the most impactful source of inspiration is the architecture right in front of us.

Our home is often a prominent feature on the site and, in turn, provides many elements to help us build a solid foundation for our outdoor spaces. When you design a garden inspired by site architecture you create a cohesive aesthetic and harmonious geometry, plus provide a lovely framework for scale and proportion. Everything seems to fit together beautifully.

HOW YOUR HOUSE CAN IMPACT YOUR LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Below are a few ways site architecture can inspire your outdoor spaces.

.....

STYLE // The style of your house can provide cues for the design of your landscape. For example, if you have a mid-century modern house, you could incorporate clean lines and minimalistic features into your outdoor areas.

.....

COLOR // Take a close look at the exterior colors of your house, including the main body color, trim, accents, and any other architectural details. These colors can serve as the foundation for your garden color scheme.

.....

MATERIALS // What are the predominant materials used in the construction of your house, such as brick, stone, wood, stucco, or siding? These materials could serve as the foundation for selecting complementary materials in your landscape.

GEOMETRY // Use lines of force (a grid inspired from your architecture) to create a framework to help you explore the proposed edges of patios, planting beds and paths. These will also help you with focal points, plus scale and proportion.

.....

ROOMS // Designing functional areas for entertaining, dining, or relaxation that flow seamlessly from indoor rooms to outdoor spaces is a lovely way to connect a garden to your home.

.....

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS // The orientation of your house can create microclimates within your landscape, affecting factors like sunlight exposure, wind patterns, and temperature variations. Understanding these microclimates can help you select appropriate plants and design features.
