Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. This week let's explore the seemingly unconditional functionality of Window Boxes!

test

WHY WINDOW BOXES?

It is said that window boxes originated in ancient Rome due to tight living conditions and limited access to personal garden space. Think of it as the start to vertical gardening!

.....

Window boxes allowed access to a small garden for many people...even if they lived in a small apartment. These tiny spaces provided a place for herbs, a connection to nature, potential habitat for birds and insects, and most importantly, personal enjoyment. How could an overflowing box of flowers right outside your window not make you smile?

.....

Today many of us still enjoy flowers tucked into lovely window boxes, but have you considered other possible uses? Below are four ways to use your window box. Can you think of others?

Culinary Garden

Consider this: right outside your kitchen window lies a large array of various herbs, spices, or even strawberries. All within a hand's reach!

.....

Privacy

Large window in your bathroom? A strategically placed window box with large shrubbery or trellised vine can provide privacy, while still giving you a beautiful view!

.....

Pollinator Garden

A window box filled to the brim with nectar-rich flowers will give you an up close view of all your local pollinators. Butterflies, bees and even hummingbirds!

.....

Aromatherapy

The wind through your window can also bring some lovely smells! Fragrant plants, such as lavender or jasmine, will fill your home with a soothing and fresh scent. Read more!
