Hello Lisa.

Welcome back to another edition of THE PENCIL CASE! As always, each issue focuses on a theme to encourage a fresh look at garden design and graphics. Today let's celebrate the idea of open garden ceilings for National Look Up at the Sky Day. ★

GARDEN CEILINGS.

When we create an outdoor space we can define it with walls (plants, fences), floors (paving, turf) and ceilings (tree canopies, umbrellas).

Ceilings are special in that they help make a space cozy or lofty depending on how high or low we place them. They can also be closed (for weather protection and shade) or open (so we can enjoy the sky).

Selecting the height and openness depends on how you would like to use your outdoor space.

OPEN GARDEN CEILINGS.

What do I mean by an open garden ceiling? This is having an element above your outdoor room to bring the scale down, but does not close off the sky completely. It allows you to enjoy the sunlight, stars, and clouds while still making a space feel cozy and defined.

Examples of open garden ceilings include:

  • garden bunting
  • hanging art pieces
  • open tree branches
  • ornamental lights/lanterns
  • pergolas
  • string lights

OPEN CEILING INSPIRATION.

I am slightly obsessed with garden bunting (or string pennants) as an open ceiling so made this PINTEREST board to share with you. Garden bunting is whimsical, dynamic and downright fun.

 .....

Did you catch my newsletter on STRING LIGHTS? These are a super special open garden ceiling since they transform scale from day to night.

.....

I'm loving this article on 25 Perfect Pergola Ideas to Transform Your Backyard. Many of these are great examples of how an open ceiling can still beautifully define a space.

LET'S DO THIS!

Do you have an open garden ceiling in your outdoor space? If not, how could an idea like this add magic to your landscape?
